After years of waiting and writing, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 AKA Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales AKA Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge is now in its Post-production stage & going to hit the theaters on May 26, 2017 (USA). The last film of this series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was released five years ago. Why is it taking so long? Mostly, you can blame The Lone Ranger (2013 film). Disney took a great challenge on Depp’s ability to star in another mind-blowing movie with another kooky performance, and it backfired so hard that the studio rolled way back on their commitment to Pirates.
After the flop in 2013, they green-lit the fifth Pirates movie officially; it took several months though. The release date was pushed back too. Jeff Nathanson wrote the final script of this movie (known for Catch Me If You Can at best, and Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull at worst) as the franchise’s long-time writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio did not return.
We’ve found lots of new blood behind the scenes, with Norwegian directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg stepping in. They are best known for Oscar-nominated film Kon-Tiki (2012 film). The goal is to make Pirates 5 much closer to the first film of this series in tone, reportedly.
According to the official synopsis:
“Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in theall-new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.’ The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea-notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (KayaScodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (BrentonThwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.” Source: pirates.disney.com
Most of you know the storyline. This time, you’ll find a mystical MacGuffin – the Trident of Poseidon and everybody is searching for it. But the good old Captain, Jack Sparrow, needs it badly because a gang of ghost pirates is trying to kill him. If the Captain gets his hands on it, the Trident will give him absolute power over the seas. However, to our utter disappointment, we did not find Jack Sparrow in the very first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. But it gave us a look at fresh faced Henry Turner – Will’s son.
You’ll find a new villain too, Javier Bardem’s Captain Salazar, leading that gang of ghost pirates. He is determined to kill every single pirate on the seas but especially Jack Sparrow, his old enemy. It’s not clear where the regular villain Captain Barbossa figures into all this, but you’ll find him too. Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner is also back in the series. It was reported that the fifth and sixth movies would be shot back to back as we’ve seen in case of Pirates 2 & 3. Now we find out that only Dead Men Tell No Tales ended up being shot.
